Colossians 1:13-14 says, “For He (The Lord) has rescued us (believers in Jesus) from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”

A few years ago my family and I decided that we would go out to dinner at this restaurant in the city that we were living in. We don’t typically get an appetizer, but this night we were very hungry, so we decided that we go ahead and order one so we could snack before our meal came. If you have children like mine who love to eat, and just can’t wait another minute to put something in their mouths, sometimes its just worth it to pay a little extra to keep those little piranha’s happy and keep them from having a melt down in the restaurant…parents, you know what I am talking about.

Eventually our food came and we enjoyed our fellowship together as a family. As we were finishing up our meal, I asked the waitress for our ticket. She told me that our meal had already been paid for.

Immediately we searched the restaurant for people that we knew so that we could express our gratitude. Who was our mystery debt payer? There had been a couple of families there that we knew that night, but when we looked around they were already gone. So, we left the restaurant that night feeling such gratitude in our hearts toward a generous debt-payer. Yes, it was just a meal, but it was a meal (and appetizer) that we didn’t have to pay for! We felt extremely grateful and blessed. Grateful that someone would show our family that kindness and humbled by their generosity toward us, whoever it was.

Colossians 1:13-14 says, “For He (The Lord) has rescued us (believers in Jesus) from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”

From the day we are born we have a debt that we owe. We are born a sinner and as Romans 6:23 says, “…the wages of sin is death…” There is a price that has to be paid…an amount due that costs us our lives.

The good news is that God said in Genesis Ch. 3, that HE would provide a way for our debt to be paid for because God loves you and I that much.

So the Lord’s death on a cross is what PAID FOR our Freedom. Jesus has provided a way for our debt to be paid for those who CONFESS and REPENT of their sinful ways and BELIEVE in Jesus.

The beautiful thing about this is you and I don’t have to scan the room looking for that mystery debt payer…His name is JESUS.

As I looked around the room that night at the restaurant, I did so because I wanted to express my thanks, my joy, and my gratefulness to the person who covered our debt.

As I think on it today, and compare that to what Jesus did for me, the payment of His life for mine, cancelling the debt I owed, my heart is full of thanksgiving, joy and gratefulness. Let our lives be filled with gratitude to the One who gave His life for ours.

If you are reading this and have never experienced that joy, that peace and that gratitude that comes with having your debt of sin cancelled by the only One who can, let today be that day. He is asking you to receive His sacrifice as your own today.

Jesus, You are the Debt Payer.
