Despite the snow that fell this past Sunday, a few of us still gathered together. I am so looking forward to each Sunday afternoon, as we will be gathering to open God’s Word and pray. This past week I shared about the avenues that will keep us a Vertical Church.
There are 5 avenues, and in this ultrasound blog we are on #3.
#1 is PRAYING BOLDLY (a posture and a mindset of crying out to God).
#2 is preaching and teaching Jesus-centered messages.
#3 is True Worship
Jesus makes this statement in John Ch. 4 where He was speaking to a woman who had just shown up to draw water from the well as she did everyday. But Jesus’ words were piercing and those words should still ring loud in our churches today. But do they?
See, Jesus said in John 4:23-24 “But the time is coming-indeed it’s here now-when TRUE WORSHIPERS will worship the Father in SPIRIT and in TRUTH. The Father is LOOKING for those who will worship Him that way. 24) For God is spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
Right before Jesus makes the above statement, He draws her attention to the fact that in her life she is drawing from the wrong well. Don’t we do this also? The well of Success, The well of Identity, The well of Relationships, the well of material possessions and so many more. Drawing from any well but Jesus leads to continual spiraling in life, constantly searching for the next big thing that only brings temporary satisfaction.
Jesus offered her water that would quench her thirst once and for all. He was offering her affirmation, forgiveness, acceptance and approval that went far beyond what any human being or material possession could give.
See, the Gospel points out that God knows we are bent on drawing from empty wells. But JESUS still loves us and desires to offer us Living Water.
The Gospel says the Church should be a safe place to confess our sins because we see through the lenses of all of us falling short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), and YET Jesus loves, forgives, rescues and RESTORES us, despite us.
Then Jesus says to this woman these words “… TRUE WORSHIPERS will worship the Father in SPIRIT and in TRUTH. The Father is LOOKING for those who will worship Him that way.
If there are TRUE WORSHIPPERS, then there must be false ones. Some will practice worship while others pretend to worship.
So, what are some characteristics of a TRUE WORSHIPPER?
- They understand that they sin because they are sinners…and when they confess their sins and realize their need for Jesus, He will forgive them and save them
- They understand that while they are not perfect, they are forgiven and in right standing with the Lord, and deeply loved and accepted by the Creator of the Universe.
- They understand that true worship is worshipping The Lord with an Inflamed Heart (SPIRIT) and with an Informed Mind (TRUTH).
“The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way.”
Our prayer is that the Lord will find us worshipping Him that way at Vertical Community Church.
Remember the Mission of Vertical Community is to bring GLORY to God, to display His LOVE, and to see lives RESTORED by the GOSPEL of JESUS CHRIST.
Our vision is to display the Love of Christ to others so they may experience His love for themselves…
We would love for you to join us in being a Vertical Community that not only CRIES out to GOD in prayer, preaches and teaches Jesus-centered, Gospel-centered messages and are True Worshippers.
Remember, it’s ALL about HIM for HIM…
