We have been laying out avenues that will keep us Vertical as we move forward as a church.
There are 5 avenues, and in this ultrasound blog we are on #5.
#1 is Praying Boldly (a posture and a mindset of crying out to God).
#2 is preaching and teaching Jesus-centered messages.
#3 is True Worship – The time is coming, indeed its now, when TRUE WORSHIPPERS will worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way.
#4 is Authentic Community
#5 is Serving Selflessly
When we think of selfishness it is easy to think of the most selfish people on earth being children. We come into the world thinking of only ourselves…feed me, change me, hold me…that’s MY toy! As a parent of three children, 11 and under, its easy to see that most of the arguments and battles that occur between them stem from selfishness.
We are all born with this “it’s all about me” attitude. All of us struggle with it, not just children. It truly takes the Holy Spirit in us to help us to die to self daily in order to serve one another.
Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
It’s easy to think of reasons not to serve others. When you have more money, or a bigger house, or when you aren’t so busy or stressed out, then you will serve, then you will make time for others.
But what about serving others when things in your world seem to be difficult?
Lets examine a situation where Jesus served others and let’s take a look into what’s going on in HIS life when HE served others in a selfless manner.
In the first several verses of Matthew 14, we read that John the Baptist is in prison. John the Baptist was referred to by Jesus as “none is greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11)…He was a relative of Jesus and the one whose purpose in life was to prepare the way of the Lord. He was the one who baptized Jesus…So John the Baptist meant a whole lot to Jesus Christ.
But in Matthew 14, the King beheaded John the Baptist and the news of John’s death spread to Jesus. Jesus being fully God and fully man…did exactly what many of us tend to do in times of a loss or times when we face an intense trial…
He withdrew and secluded himself.
Matthew 14:13-14 says, “As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. 14 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”
And then Jesus goes further than that and feeds the crowd, which ended up being 5,000 men plus women and children.
Time and time again Jesus gave us the example to serve others selflessly and to serve others with an unconditional love.
Matthew 20:28 says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others”
